Do I Need A Doula For My Caesarean Birth?

caesarean birth

YES! If you are having a scheduled cesarean birth, you may be wondering if you still need a labour doula to support you. Regardless of how your baby is entering the world, it can be real and raw and damn right scary! Below is a list of ways your doula can support you through this life altering experience:

  • provide you with information and knowledge to help you better prepare both physically and mentally

  • create a birth plan to ensure your needs are being met when your baby arrives such as skin-to-skin contact or breastfeeding

  • physical support during sometimes painful procedures such as getting an IV or epidural

  • help you process any fears or anxieties you may be experiencing regarding the surgery or your adjustment to parenthood

  • when applicable, your doula can stay with you during the delivery of your baby and will remain with you after your baby is born

  • should you need additional support, your doula can care for your baby

  • suggest post-operative comfort measures (like frozen sanitary pads!)

  • assist with breastfeeding positions that will not irritate your incision site.

At The Doula Tree, our labour package includes one postpartum visit. This is particularly important if you have had a cesarean birth, as you may need additional support while you recover. Following your surgery, your doctor may suggest the following:

  • avoid heavy lifting

  • keep incision dry

  • avoid driving a vehicle for extended periods of time

  • rest as much as possible

During your postpartum visit and any additional hours you may wish to purchase, your doula will be there to support all of your physical and emotional needs. This may include but is not limited to: newborn care, overnight support, household duties, sibling care, grocery shopping, breastfeeding support and temporary live-in services.
